'The Advocate' Features Cover Story On Gay Polygamy
June 14, 2006 - The Advocate, a national gay magazine has recently
featured a cover story on gay polygamous relationships. "Polygamy & Gay Men:
Dirty laundry or sexual freedom? How gay men handle multiple partners,"
describes the lives of several trios of males who consider themselves married to
each other.
Among those featured were Dale Dubach, Chaz Weathers and John Osgood of San
Diego who have a polyamorous relationship. According to Weathers, "We're as
married as we could be. We all have rings and are committed to each other and
have a day that we celebrate our anniversary. Dale and I had a ceremony years
ago, but we've never had a ceremony for the three of us. That would just open
such a can of worms."
The Advocate's polygamy article was the subject of a Congressional Weekly report
(June 12, 2006) that noted the puzzling timing of the article coming the same
week the Senate voted on a marriage protection amendment. Critics have argued
that same-sex marriage would be the slippery slope that would invite polygamous
relationships to be legalized. According to the CW article, the polygamy article
seemed to "buttress the 'slippery slope' argument of social conservatives, who
see gay unions as but the first step in an irreversible decline in sexual
mores."
