APA Endorsement Of Same-Sex Marriage Ignores Scientific Evidence, Says NARTH Psychiatrist
July 28, 2005 -
Rick Fitzgibbons, M.D., a member of NARTH's Scientific Advisory
Committee, was recently interviewed by the Catholic news service Zenit,
on same-sex marriage and the American Psychiatric Association. Dr.
Fitzgibbons is also a member of the Catholic Medical Association and
co-authored "Homosexuality and Hope."
According to Dr. Fitzgibbons, in "Same-Sex Marriage and Mental Health,"
the APA's endorsement of gay marriage was done by ignoring the
scientific data on the importance of children being reared in homes with
a mother and a father.
Dr. Fitzgibbons observed: "The APA has chosen to ignore the significant
medical research which has documented serious psychiatric and medical
illnesses associated with ... same-sex attractions and behaviors."
He says that peer reviewed studies demonstrate that gays have an
"inability to maintain committed relationships and rampant promiscuity"
is the norm in the homosexual lifestyle.
He continues: "Dr. Rekers and Dr. Byrd's summary of some of the vast
literature on child development demonstrates the vital importance of a
father and a mother for the developmental needs of a child. In effect,
the social science research supports the recent statement of the Vatican
that to deliberately deprive a child of a father or a mother through
adoption by those in the homosexual lifestyle would inflict severe harm
onto those children."
Dr. Fitzgibbons is critical of many programs in the public schools that
portray the gay lifestyle as healthy: "Many of these educational
programs attempt to mask their true goals by the use of names such as
diversity, tolerance or 'no name-calling weeks' when, in fact, they
attempt to undermine the Church's teaching on marriage, human sexuality
and, now child-rearing."
