AIDS Rises By 16% In Britain
July 6, 2004 - A report out of London indicates that HIV infections have
risen 16% in the last two years. According to ThisIsLondon, there are currently
51,000 adults and children in the UK who are HIV infected. Among this number,
14,000 are women.
Dr. Catherine Hankins with UNAids, says the increase in infections among
heterosexuals "...is largely due to people arriving from countries where AIDS is
endemic--such as sub-Saharan Africa, some Caribbean countries, Cambodia and
Thailand."
Dr. Hankins also says that a sense of complacency has set in among young gay
males. "They are basically assuming people on anti-retroviral therapy won't be
as infectious--and that if they are infected they can take the drugs. But these
are toxic drugs and they are not a cure."
Last year nearly five million people became newly infected with HIV throughout
the world, according to Hankins.
