British Government Officials
Erasing 'Marriage' In Documents

January 24, 2006 - With the recent passage of gay civil partnerships in England, marriage registry offices through that nation are deleting the term "marriage" from their documents.

The Birmingham Post reported on this decision in its January 20, 2006 issue. The paper notes: "Many viewed this development [civil partnerships] as a watershed in the struggle for gay rights proof that justice and equality are winning the fight against prejudice and discrimination. However, whilst the law acknowledges gay civil partnerships as equal to heterosexual marriage, language is struggling to catch up. In the light of new legislation, the word 'marriage' is rapidly being deleted from register offices all over the country."
