Magellan Health Services Reappoints Dr. Warren Throckmorton
Encino, California --
"NARTH is very pleased to learn that Magellan Health Services has chosen to
invite Dr. Warren Throckmorton to rejoin its National Professional Advisory
Council," said NARTH advisor Dr. A. Dean Byrd today. "Magellan had originally
dismissed Dr. Throckmorton because of his views concerning sexual orientation.
They have wisely reconsidered their position."
Dr. Throckmorton believes in the right of client self-determination when it
comes to sexual orientation.
"Dr. Throckmorton's views on homosexuality are hardly controversial," observed
Dr. Byrd. "He was apparently the victim of homosexual politics within Magellan,
but cooler heads have finally prevailed within the organization. We commend
Magellan for taking the high road and agreeing with the view that individuals
with unwanted same-sex attractions should be free to explore their options with
competent therapists. Dr. Throckmorton is simply offering these individuals a
choice."
Magellan spokeswoman Erin Somers told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Magellan
and Throckmorton agree with the view that a patient has "a right to explore a
variety of therapies when he or she is grappling with sexual orientation
issues."
"Ms. Somers is correct and this decision to invite Dr. Throckmorton to rejoin
the advisory council is an encouraging sign," said Dr. Byrd.
Dr. Byrd is available for interviews at 818-789-4440.
The National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality was founded in 1992 and is composed of psychiatrists, psychoanalytically informed psychologists, certified social workers, and other behavioral scientists, as well as laymen in fields such as law, religion, and education.
