NARTH Urges Media To Accurately Report On Reparative Therapy
Encino, California -- The President of the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality, Joseph Nicolosi, Ph.D., and President-Elect A. Dean Byrd, Ph.D., are calling upon members of the media to accurately report on reparative therapy.
"During the past month, Montel Williams and Diane Sawyer have run features dealing with reparative therapy, but neither one of them invited a therapist on their shows to explain it," said Joseph Nicolosi, Ph.D. "Both shows actually dealt with faith-based ministries, not reparative therapy--the approach I developed more than two decades ago. If the mainstream media has any interest in accurately reporting on our therapy, they should invite real reparative therapists to tell their stories."
NARTH President-elect A. Dean Byrd, Ph.D., agrees. "Whenever any form of reorientation therapy is discussed in the mainstream media, it usually involves someone who either never went through such therapy, or went through a faith-based process and became disillusioned. This is poor journalism and doesn't serve the public. Consumers of print media and broadcast media deserve better information. We are asking for a fair hearing of our work - not distortions or characterizations."
NARTH professionals--including psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, social workers, lawyers and others-- are available for print or broadcast interviews. To contact NARTH, call 1-888-364-4744 or email a request to: info@narth.com. Peer-reviewed articles are readily available for downloading from NARTH's web site: www.narth.com.
NARTH, founded in 1992, is composed of psychiatrists, psychologists, certified social workers, professional and pastoral counselors and other behavioral scientists, as well as laymen from a wide variety of backgrounds such as law, religion, and education.
