NARTH Reacts To Mass. Supreme Judicial Court Decision On Gay Marriage
Encino, California -- "In ruling that gay
couples have the right to marry, the state Supreme
Judicial Court of Massachusetts is undermining one of
the most important institutions in our
culture--marriage as a union between one man and one
woman," said NARTH Vice President A. Dean Byrd today.
"The state has a responsibility to promote the
traditional family, which is rooted in marriage.
Children are best brought up in a home with a mother
and father--not two fathers or mothers."
NARTH is opposed to the normalization of gay marriage
and filed a friend of the court brief in the
Massachusetts gay marriage case. In its brief, NARTH
observed that social science evidence supports the
traditional model of man-woman marriage as the ideal
family form for fostering a child's healthy
development. Gay partnerships do not meet the emotional
needs of children.
"Children raised by homosexuals are more apt to
experience gender and sexual orientation confusion;
they are more apt to become promiscuous; they are at
greater risk of losing a parent to AIDS, substance
abuse, or suicide. Homosexuals suffer more depression
and other emotional difficulties," said Dr. Byrd.
"Furthermore, non-heterosexual couples are less stable
than heterosexual couples in their relationships, and
they are more likely to separate. Research reveals that
promiscuity is virtually the norm among male
non-heterosexuals."
In NARTH's friend of the court brief, we also noted:
"It is clear that human physiology is designed for
sexual intercourse between male and female. Two members
of the same sex cannot have sexual intercourse, for
sexual intercourse requires both male and female
genitals....One hundred percent of same-sex couples are
by definition sterile as a couple. Neither partner in a
male same-sex couple can produce a child without a
surrogate mother. Neither female in a same-sex couple
can produce a child without a sperm donor. ...The
prevailing paradigm for procreation is sexual
intercourse between a man and a woman."
NARTH's Brief also observed: "Throughout history,
nearly every civilization has recognized that same-sex
relationships are a departure from the norm. ... Even
Classical Greece did not view homosexual behavior as
natural."
"The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court has taken
upon itself the 'right' to overturn cultural
prohibitions against the practice of
homosexuality--prohibitions that have been in place for
thousands of years," said Dr. Byrd. "The consequences
of this decision will be disastrous to our society."
