NARTH Critiques New 'Sexual Orientation' Genome Study
Encino, California --
Three members of the NARTH Scientific Advisory Committee have recently analyzed
a study purporting to have mapped the "sexual orientation" of gay males. The
study was found to be biased and seriously flawed.
The study, "A genonomewide scan of male sexual orientation," was published in a
recent issue of Human Genetics.
The study claims to have found markers in several chromosomes that allegedly
relate to a male's sexual orientation. One of the researchers of this National
Institutes of Health study is gay activist Dr. Dean Hamer.
NARTH advisor Dr. A. Dean Byrd analyzed the study and concluded: "This is a
'noble' effort that came up with nothing. ... Good science begins with a strong
hypothesis not with a 'fishing expedition' which is interpreted as something
other than for what it is."
Dr. Gerald Schoenewolf also critiqued the study and observed that it is "written
in super-scientific language in order to cover up the fact that it's totally
biased."
Dr. Sander Breiner concurred. The study, said Breiner, "is another poor study in
an increasingly vast collection of poor studies that are quoted by each other's
poor study to enhance the 'scientific validity' of what they hypothesize."
NARTH's full critique is available here: "Researchers Claim To Have Genome Scan
Of 'Sexual Orientation' In Men."
Dr. Byrd is available for interviews at 818-789-4440.
NARTH, founded in 1992, is composed of psychiatrists, psychologists, certified social workers, professional and pastoral counselors and other behavioral scientists, as well as laymen from a wide variety of backgrounds such as law, religion, and education.
