Transforming Congregation Leader Promotes Reparative Therapy
By Frank York
May 11, 2004 - The Rev. Karen Booth, executive director of the Christian
ministry Transforming Congregations, has recently published a commentary,
"Reparative Therapy a valid approach," on the ReporterInteractive web site.
Rev. Booth writes: "While many therapists still persist in the unproven belief
that homosexuality is inborn and unchangeable--and therefore--continue to offer
treatment only in support of that worldview--a growing number have the courage
and insight to see an alternative reality."
Booth points out that Dr. Robert Spitzer and Dr. Warren Throckmorton have both
published research that shows that homosexuals can change.
She asks the question: "What is it about homosexual transformation that so
terrifies pro-gay activists? I personally believe it is because the option of
change seriously undermines their political arguments and agenda."
Rev. Booth quotes Dr. Spitzer's commentary in the Wall Street Journal: "Science
progresses by asking interesting questions, not by avoiding questions whose
answers might not be helpful in achieving a political agenda. Gay rights are a
completely separate issue, and defensible for ethical reasons. At the end of the
day, the full inclusion of gays in society does not, I submit, require a
commitment to the false notion that sexual orientation is invariably fixed for
all people."
