'The Gift' To Be Screened In New York City
A film that surveys the growing trend of bug chasing and barebacking among gays is being screened in New York City later this month.
September 1, 2005 -
The National Association for The Advancement of Psycho-analysis (NAAP) is
screening "The Gift," about bug chasing and barebacking among gays on September
25. After the film is shown, NAAP members will hear Drs. Mark Blechner, Jack
Drescher, and Perry Halkitis, discuss "Sex & Death In The Age Of AIDS: A
Psychoanalytic Exploration."
Blechner is a Training and Supervising Analyst with the William Alanson White
Institute; Drescher is also an analyst at the institute and heads the American
Psychiatric Association's Committee on Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Issues;
Halkitis is editor of the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Psychotherapy.
"The Gift" features a central character Doug, who moved from the Midwest to San
Francisco to join the gay community. He became a bug chaser and actively sought
to become HIV infected. He is now dealing with the consequences of bug chasing.
Louise Hogarth, director of "The Gift" says she hopes the film will raise
awareness of the issues of isolation and division in the gay community around
HIV status, and lead to a renewed prevention effort.
