MONTHLY UPDATE FOR
NARTH CLINICAL MEMBERS LIST

May 2006

by Marc S. Dillworth, Ph.D.
Clinical Member Facilitator

I want to thank Dr. Rogers Wright and Dr. Nicolas Cumming, authors of the controversial book, Destructive Trends in Mental Health for participating in the discussion last month. It gave me hope that things can change in the mental health community.

The book has resonated with many mental health professionals, and may have started a movement to stop the political activists, who currently have a stranglehold on the professional organizations. The authors gave many suggestions about how this could come about. These men have made a great contribution to the mental health community.

If you missed this topic, don't miss the next one for May 2006. Dr. Mark Yarhouse will be taking questions, and he will tell us about his work at the Institute for the Study of Sexual Identity located at Regent University.

Mark A. Yarhouse, Psy.D, is a licensed clinical psychologist and Associate Professor of Psychology in the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Dr. Yarhouse received his B.A. from Calvin College, M.A. in Clinical Psychology, M.A. in Theological Studies, and Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Wheaton College. Dr. Yarhouse serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Family Violence, The Family Journal, Journal of Psychology and Theology, and Marriage and Family: A Christian Journal.

He has contributed articles to Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, Psychotherapy, and the American Journal of Family Therapy. Dr. Yarhouse is coauthor of Homosexuality: The Use of Scientific Research in the Church's Moral Debate (2000), Sexual Identity: A Guide to Living in the Time Between the Times (2003), and Sexual Identity Synthesis: Attributions, Meaning-Making, and the Search for Congruence (2004).
